To apply for a DBS Check it is important that you provide the correct identification. To avoid delays it is vital that you understand the requirements and the documents that are required for the process to run efficiently.
ID verification paths during Basic DBS Check
When you are applying for a Basic DBS Check there are two available paths of how you can prove your identity.
The first path have the most direct approach because it requires only one primary identity document plus one further document.
If the applicant can’t provide the documents for route one, a possible option is route two.
This route involves presenting a document from group 2a followed by two more documents from groups 2a and 2b.
We will get more in-depth about these groups further in the article.
ID verification paths during Standard/Enhanced DBS Checks
When applying for a Standard or Enhanced DBS Check there are three potential routes, every one of them requiring different kinds of ID verification documents.
The faster and easiest way will be the route one with which you must present a single primary identity document alongside two further documents.
Again the second option can be used when the individual can’t present documents for route one.
By the same token when the applicant can’t possibly submit documents for path two, a third option is required.
The paths are different in terms of the required documents but there is also a similarity between them.
In every case at least one of the documents must show the applicant’s address.
Types of documents used for a DBS Check
As you know until now, every path requires a different mix of documents.
These documents are split into groups.
The information is directly from the Disclosure and Barred Service (DBS):
Group 1: Primary identity documents
Group 2a: Trusted government documents
Group 2b: Financial and social history documents
The documents from group one allow the applicant to meet the requirements for a DBS Check using path one.
These documents include:
Passport
Biometric residence permit (BRPs)
Present driving license photocard
Adoption certificate
Birth certificate
If an individual is unable to present a Group 1 document, they must provide multiple documents from Groups 2a and 2b, following the required path.
Some of these documents may include:
Present driving license photocard
P45 or P60 statement
Marriage/civil partnership certificate
Mortgage Statement
Benefit Statement
Utility bill
Visa/work permit
No matter if you are an applicant for a DBS Check, or an employer you must be familiar with the appropriate practices and rules of the process.
Providing unrelated documents can slow down the process and put you in a bad situation.
